This gift could literally save five lives! Cervical cancer is prevalent in PNG. Bush Angels will use a GeneXpert machine to diagnose cervical cancer within hours on the spot in the bush. Women being tested use a self-administered swab that goes into a cartridge that fits into the GeneXpert machine. These cartridges cost around $AUD12 each and this gift provides 5 women with early screening that will probably save their lives. If the results are positive for HPV (the virus linked to cervical cancer) and the cancer is in the early stages, our nurses burn off the cells using thermal oblation and stop the cancer. If the cancer has already developed beyond the early stages the woman is referred for hospital treatment.
